After 20+ years, today, Metalogic employs over 500+ on-site field inspection technicians and agents. They specialize in implementing advanced technologies, focused on reducing the customer's risk and cost. Corporate headquarters are located in Canada and the United States, with offices throughout North America, as well as various projects around the world.

The Ask
We were approached to lead the combined teams of two companies in transforming the existing Inspect-IQ software solution, bringing it into the modern era. Metalogic was looking to transform its business processes and workflows, as well as modernize its platform to replace its previous infrastructure. This previous system needed to change to increase productivity, improve real-time data access, and function efficiently for both inspectors and management. With plans for continued growth and expansion, Metalogic needed a more performant, streamlined, and advanced solution.
The project involved collaboration between product developers, UX/UI designers, project managers, and software engineers, working alongside Metalogic's subject matter experts (SMEs) to design and develop an evolved Inspect-IQ solution. We were expected to deliver a feature-enriched, streamlined, and innovative inspection management system that would reshape the way inspections were conducted, managed, and reported across nearly all departments.
The Approach
As with every project, we approached our work with meticulous attention to detail. This complex cloud-based application was used by over 400 technicians and required to function even while offline. We had to take a thorough, methodical approach to understanding its intricacies before moving forward.
- Once a comprehensive understanding of the old system was achieved, the requirements for the new system were documented. We worked with key stakeholders and SMEs through in-depth interviews to gather their insights and ensure all parties' expectations were met. These insights helped shape the creation of a detailed Software Requirements Specification document, which served as a blueprint to guide the system’s redesign with precision and perfect alignment to Metalogic’s core objectives
- In collaboration with Metalogic, we mapped existing workflows and reimagined them to introduce efficiencies. Key features, including a sophisticated Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system and an Administration Panel, were designed to simplify processes for technicians and administrators alike. These improvements aimed to streamline workflows, offload administrative tasks, and ensure better control for project managers, enhancing both field operations and remote management.
- To modernize Inspect-IQ and enhance its usability, we focused on crafting the frontend experience and introducing a streamlined, scalable, and user-friendly interface. Our goal was to eliminate inefficiencies, improve workflows, and ensure that technicians and administrators had the tools they needed to operate more effectively. A key challenge here was the fragmented workflows that made inspection data requests, collection, and reporting cumbersome. Field technicians required modern interfaces that made navigation easy, while administrators required efficient tools to oversee operations. Hence, we took a user-centered approach, reimagining the interface, optimizing workflows, and implementing structured processes that enhanced collaboration across teams.
- Major reworks and improvements of the user interface and administrative features were conducted. We introduced a role-based access control (RBAC) system, allowing administrators to assign roles and permissions more effectively. This shift redistributed administrative tasks from field technicians to the administrative team and freeing inspectors to focus on their core responsibilities, while key personnel handled approvals and configurations remotely.
- We also addressed the challenges with inspection assessment criteria management. Previously, changes to acceptance criteria required backend developers to manually update the system. Our work established a structured and scalable approach that makes future adjustments easier and more efficient.
- The Organization’s Admin Settings is another critical component of the solution. We developed a centralized control interface where project managers and administrators could efficiently manage users, roles, system notifications, projects, clients, equipment, and inspection codes & procedures. By giving the administrative team greater oversight and control, we enabled smoother operations and better adaptability.
- Once the design was finalized, we moved into development, where we focused on building key features such as the Admin Panel and role-based access controls on the frontend, alongside and in complete collaboration with Metalogic’s backend development team. The solution was designed to be flexible, scalable, and future-proof, with a system that could grow alongside Metalogic's needs. To ensure strong leadership throughout the project, we also provided our client with a Fractional Tech Team Leader for consulting and support.
The Result
By the end of the project, we had developed a modern, intuitive, and scalable frontend for Inspect-IQ. Throughout the process, we ran through concept sketches, Lo‑Fi and Hi‑Fi designs, and interactive prototypes to secure complete buy‑in from all SMEs and stakeholders before finalizing the scope. Our work set the foundation for future innovation and ensured that Inspect-IQ can continue adapting to the demands of a growing user base while enhancing the overall efficiency of Metalogic’s inspection management process.
