About the App and the Company

EpiTOme Genetics is a Canadian biotechnology company headquartered in the Waterloo Region, where it is part of the Communitech innovation community. The company specializes in DNA analysis using state-of-the-art technology and innovative strategies. It provides high-quality analytical laboratory services to patients, healthcare providers, and businesses.

The EpiTOme Healthcare Biological Data Visualization & Reporting Platform is built to help users monitor and understand their health through detailed test results and personalised insights. It provides a digital space where users can access their biomarker test results, review detailed reports, and learn more about their health conditions via the Learning Centre.

The Ask

EpiTOme approached us with a clear but complex request: to design a digital solution that made lab test results simple, visual, and easy to interpret.

Behind that vision were several key challenges:

Medical complexity
Users often struggled to understand lab results, which created confusion and anxiety about their health.
Stakeholder-focused POC
A proof of concept designed to prove value and secure stakeholder confidence through simulated, front-end-only interactions.
Future-proofing
While the POC was for visualization only, it had to set the stage for eventual adoption, intuitive enough for everyday users with no medical background, yet structured enough to evolve into a scalable solution.
Mobile-first expectation
The platform needed to deliver insights within a compact, user-friendly mobile interface.
Trust and security
Even as a demo, the product had to convey credibility, intelligence, and a clear pathway toward a secure, production-ready platform.

In essence, EpiTOme asked us to create a polished, stakeholder-ready POC that:

  • Presented biomarker results in a way that inspired clarity rather than anxiety
  • Delivered a consistent, intuitive experience across both web and mobile platforms
  • Balanced simplicity with sophistication, a glimpse of what a full MVP could become

The Approach

Our mandate wasn’t to build a full application, but to create a proof of concept that told a convincing story to stakeholders. That shaped every decision we made.
We focused on four priorities:

Since data visualization was key, we focused on building a dynamic interface that allowed users to navigate their reports easily and securely. Secure authentication ensured that personal health data remained protected. Throughout development, we prioritized performance, accessibility, and scalability, making sure that as the platform grew, it remained smooth and reliable.

Clarity in Data Visualization

  • We transformed complex biomarker reports into simple, color-coded graphs and summaries. Instead of leaving patients with confusion or anxiety, the interface made health data approachable and understandable at a glance.

Reports & Historical Trends

  • Beyond snapshots, we included mock reports and longitudinal charts so users could see how biomarker values shift over time. This moved the conversation from isolated numbers to meaningful health trajectories.

Learning Centre & Glossary

  • To build trust and accessibility, we linked every marker to plain-language explanations, articles, and a glossary. Patients could understand not just what their results were, but what they meant.

Stakeholder-Ready Storytelling

  • Since there was no live backend, we built simulated authentication, dashboards, and data flows powered by mock data. These weren’t production features; they were narrative elements designed to show what the platform could become in a secure, scalable future.

By keeping the scope tight and focused on these priorities, we delivered a POC that did exactly what it needed to: turn a vision into a credible, tangible product demo that inspired confidence.

Challenges & Solutions

Complex medical data was fragmented across multiple sources, making it hard to interpret and navigate

Built a unified, structured data model that normalized records, removed redundancies, and connected related information in one accessible interface

No backend database during early POC development, yet we needed realistic data relationships

Simulated a database using JSON files organized per user, maintaining relational consistency and mimicking real API interactions

The frontend needed to integrate seamlessly with a real API later, without major refactoring

Architected the mock system using React Query and Axios, replicating production data flows for easy plug-and-play transition to live APIs

Delivering an intuitive experience on both mobile and desktop

Designed responsive adaptive layouts with a mobile-first approach to ensure usability across all devices

Presenting complex medical insights in a patient-friendly way

Created simplified summaries with color-coded visuals and clear hierarchy for effortless comprehension

The Results & Impact

The final Proof of Concept achieved its purpose: a polished, stakeholder-ready demo that simplified complex health reporting and gave decision-makers a clear vision of the platform’s potential.
Immediate outcomes included:

A mobile-first design with intuitive navigation

Color-coded dashboards that made health data easy to interpret

Downloadable reports and historical data visualizations for long-term tracking

A Learning Centre that contextualized biomarker results for patients

A scalable foundation designed to support the future MVP
